How to prevent the worst - THUMBED!

September 30, 2021 Tony Maccani

Hey guys! Wanted to share a quick thought about our glove position when we’re receiving. Whether we are working in our primary (receiving) stance or our secondary (active) stance, we need to give a GREAT target but also prepare our glove to receive.

I have heard of a few guys getting “THUMBED” lately and wanted to address a glaring flaw to why that might be happening. We need to make sure that after we give our target, we are relaxing our glove thumb to “2 o’clock.” This means that our thumb is pointing to 2 on a clock as if we are looking through the clock to the pitcher. Although our thumb may be more at the 4 o’clock position in our target, we need to make sure that it gets to 2 o’clock, with our hand relaxed (like we are shaking someone’s hand) when we prepare to receive.

Positioning our thumb this way will create freedom in our glove movement to receive in the right position. Most importantly, work around our left knee on those pitches moving towards that position.

Hope this helps and prevents any injury going forward! Stay healthy out there and keep working on your craft!
