Summer Catching Camp - 3 week series

This three week catching series will cover all the fundamentals behind the plate with an emphasis on receiving, blocking and throwing. Catchers will go through a number of drills used at the college level to prepare catchers to be successful in the game.

Receiving drills will be focused on correct framing technique, how to steal strikes, fastballs vs. off-speed receiving and picking. Blocking drills will be geared towards anticipating pitches in the dirt and how to control the ball in the dirt. Technique will emphasize how to cover the most range and move our body freely in the catching stance. Throwing will be instructed with consideration to players’ throwing volume this summer. Techniques for throwing will be discussed and worked on, including footwork and exchange. How to maintain and develop arm strength will be taught using the Jaeger band series and other exercises to prevent throwing injuries will be discussed.

In this camp, catchers will be divided by age and put through a number of drills to develop proper technique. All instruction will be done at Marge Schott Stadium on the campus of the University of Cincinnati. UC assistant coach and catching coordinator, Tony Maccani will be the lead instructor at camp.

Other catching skills that will be worked on include fielding bunts, plays at the plate, pass balls and wild pitches as well as pop-ups.
